These very cuddly, lovable small white dog belongs to the poodle and toy group. It has been considered as an aristocrat in the world of canine being on of the ancient breed. Maltese is originally called as the Melitaie Dog or the Ancient Dogge of Malta, the Majestic Creature, the Comforter, the Dog of the Roman Ladies, the Bichon, the Maltese Lion Dog, the Maltese Terrier and the Spaniel Gentle. This dog’s breed has been traced to have started many centuries ago.

It has been though that this breed is a descendant of the Spitz which is the type of dog breed that dwells on the Swiss Lake. Nonetheless, its exact origin is still unknown having some evidence taken that such breed originated from the Tibetan Terrier and in the rest of Asia.

Appearance and Size

Maltese is a compact,tiny and slightly longer than tall dog. It weighs 4 to 10lbs and stands from 7 to 9 inches. It has a pure silky white, thick, heavy, shiny hair hanging from the ground for about 8 and a half inches. It does not have undercoat and it does not shed hair off their coat. Its head is slightly round, the teeth has a a scissors bite and the eyes are round, deep, large with dark rims. The ears of this dog is long. Its tail is long haired and very fluffy. It also has a small, fluffy and round feet.

Special Care

Maltese are considered to be hypoallergenic for it have little to no shedding. It does not have an undercoat hence it requires daily cleaning since regular grooming is required to prevent these dogs from matting.

Its owner must also be mindful of Tear Staining which is the dark staining in the hair around the dogs eyes. This tear stain cab be removed by using fine metal comb that has been moistened by lukewarm water.
